Melbourne City Youth Ballet

Founded in 2014, Melbourne City Youth Ballet is Victoria's most prominent youth classical ballet performance company. This not-for-profit organisation, overseen by performance company Melbourne City Ballet, provides a platform for young dancers from across the state to work together in a company style environment to create three classical ballet works annually.

The company holds one annual audition each year (usually around September) then two smaller subsequent auditions for remaining placements in productions. Youth participating in the program will generally work with the company fortnightly, for an intensive week and each week closer to the production. More information regarding this course is available in our educator pack found below.

Melbourne City Youth Ballet's Artistic Director is Yuiko Masukawa who has worked on all productions to date for the company. Melbourne City Youth Ballet is proudly supported by PW Dance & Sportswear, Moreland City Council, Anna Tetlow Pilates and National Photography.

2018 Season

In 2018 Melbourne City Youth Ballet will perform three very different productions to not only challenge young dancers from across the state, but also to entertain Victorian audiences. This includes two new ballets for the company, Giselle and A Christmas Carol. We look forward to seeing you at our next performance to support these young emerging dancers.

Giselle Landscape.jpg

Hauntingly beautiful, Giselle tells the tale of a young peasant girl who discovers her lover, Albrecht is betrothed to another, and ultimately dies of a broken heart. Led by the Queen of the Willis Myrtha, Giselle is roused from her grave by the spirits who haunt the forest and are set on revenge of any man they meet.

Since its first performance in 1841, Giselle has become one of the world’s greatest romantic ballet’s. Artistic Director Yuiko Masukawa will pay homage to the exquisite ballet by honouring the traditional style of Petipa.

This will be Melbourne City Youth Ballet's first experience performing this classical ballet.

A Christmas Carol Landscape.jpg

A Christmas carol

Melbourne City Youth Ballet starts a new tradition with the introduction of our very own Christmas ballet. Based on the famous story by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol follows the story of Ebonezer Scrooge, a selfish old businessman who cares not for Christmas or his fellow man.

On Christmas Eve, Ebonezer Scrooge is visited by a series of ghosts who give him one last chance to find his morality and meaning in the holiday spirit.

This new ballet choreographed by Yuiko Masukawa will be a family favourite for years to come!
